2019 Scott London/Chris Riley Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament

A message from Mary B. Riley, President of the Scott London/Chris Riley Memorial Scholarship Fund:

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Scott London/Chris Riley Memorial Scholarship Fund!  The main fundraiser is an annual golf tournament held on the first Monday of August.  This was the 18th year that the tournament was held at the Cranston Country Club and a total of six $4,000 scholarships were awarded.

A large portion of the funds raised comes directly from the purchasing of tee signs, a majority of which were purchased by various Locals from AFSCME RI Council 94 as well as other unions within the State of Rhode Island.  As a Union leader, this kind of support means a lot to me, and it goes to show the level of commitment that unions have to contributing and giving back to the community.

Scott London and Chris Riley were two enthusiastic young students with an appetite for learning.  Following their deaths from cancer, their families joined to create the Scott London/Chris Riley Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor their love of education.  The fund grants scholarships to cancer survivors, who were treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and their immediate families.

One London/Riley scholar, a survivor of osteogenic sarcoma, graduated from Harvard Medical School.  He is now a Board-Certified gastroenterologist in private practice.  Two other winners graduated from Law School, one from Roger Williams law and another from Western New England Law.  Other winners have become teachers and nurses.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the tournament and/or contributed to the Scholarship Fund.  Your continued support is highly appreciated and helps in continuing to provide assistance to college students in honor of Scott London and Chris Riley.

 With Much Appreciation,

Mary B. Riley
