In the Spotlight: Local 528

Members of Rhode Island Council 94 remain active in their communities throughout the State of Rhode Island.  This month’s spotlight is on members of Local 528 who work at the University of Rhode Island.  Over the past couple of years, the Local 528 Charity Committee has worked extremely hard to help those in need.  Each year, the Committee holds an annual food drive for the Johnny Cake Center of Peace Dale.  The members also raise several thousand dollars for the Johnny Cake Center of Peace Dale by raffling items at the URI holiday mini mall.  This event has grown from only a handful of members to well of a dozen due to general membership support.  The Committee also raised $1,000.00 for the South Kingstown Animal Shelter by organizing a yard sale.

Recently, the Committee has partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Providence.  Pictured here, on April 23, 2019, members of the Committee volunteered to cook a meal for guests of the Ronald McDonald House.  Last month the Committee held a 50/50 raffle and, thanks to a member giving back his winnings, the Committee was able to present a check for $470.00 to the Ronald McDonald House of Providence.  On June 1st the Committee is holding a spaghetti dinner at the South Kingstown Elks Hall, proceeds of which will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House of Providence.

When asked for comment about Local 528’s efforts, President Michael McDonald stated that “It really has been fun to see the member engagement and I am very proud of the efforts and generosity not only of the committee but of all the members of Local 528.  Everyone has really engaged in this effort.  It is yet another reminder of just how interwoven union members are into the fabric of our communities.”
