Congratulations & Farewell to Darlene Golomb

On August 28, 2020 we bid a congratulatory farewell to longtime Local 528, RI Council 94, AFSCME member Darlene Golomb.  Darlene worked for the University of Rhode Island for 32 years. As she enters a well-deserved retirement where she plans to spend more time with her husband, adult children and grandchildren I wanted to take a moment to thank her for all she has done for Local 528.

She began her career at W Alton Jones Campus moving on to the Kingston Campus as a Housekeeper. From there she worked her way to Building Superintendent before finally retiring as Supervisor of Housekeeping Services.

Sister Golomb also served nearly 20 years as Union Secretary for Local 528. While serving as Secretary she was able to gain the respect and support of nearly all of the membership of Local 528. At a time when the University was privatizing custodial services Darlene spearheaded a monumental effort to take back the custodial work for the members of Local 528. Led by Darlene's efforts Local 528 under President Downey's leadership was able to recoup all custodial work in University buildings on the Kingston Campus. Because of her knowledge and leadership Local 528 members clean every building on the Kingston campus.

Though she did many great things to improve the lives of Local 528 members the "in sourcing" effort Darlene helped to spearhead will certainly be her legacy amongst the membership and URI community. Each member now and future owes Darlene a debt of gratitude.

Congratulations to Darlene THANK YOU and best wishes on a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Michael B. McDonald

President, Local 528
