Greetings from the President
Welcome to Rhode Island Council 94, American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO web site.
Council 94 is one of the largest unions in Rhode Island representing over 10,000 active and retired municipal, state, and private sector employees. A small sample of the jobs that our diverse membership does include: data entry operators, cook’s helpers, capitol police, food inspectors, biologists, housekeepers, field auditors, sheriffs, airport crash rescue, eligibility technicians, certified nursing assistants.
As president of Council 94 I have worked hard to build a bolder, stronger and more dynamic union.
During my two years as president, Council 94 has:
- Launched aggressive organizing drives to bring in new members.
- Become much more accessible to the media. Council 94 has initiated numerous media interviews; launched TV, radio, and print advertising campaigns; and successfully launched this web site.
- Continue to provide an excellent level of representation to our members through contract negotiations and grievance/arbitration representation.
- Finished the renovations of our union hall including the installation of a new computer network.
- Established a new transparent and democratic endorsement process for political candidates.
My commitment to the labor union movement comes from 36 years experience as a plumber and president of Local 528 at the University of Rhode Island. Please enjoy your visit and exploration of our web site. I personally look forward to hearing your feedback on the web site or any other issue of concern.
In solidarity,
J. Michael Downey |
